Tarantella - The tarantella (tarentule, tarentella, tarantel) is a dance in 6/8 time characterised by the rapid whirling of couples. It is named after Taranto in southern Italy, and/or after the wolf spider or "tarantula" spider (Lycosa_tarentula) whose bite was allegedly deadly and could be cured only by frenetic dancing (see tarantism), although the wolf spider's venom is not dangerous enough to cause such severe effects.

Lycosa tarentula - The "Tarantula" spider whose scientific name is Lycosa tarentula (or, more recently, Hogna tarentula) is a wolf spider from the area around a city in Italy now called Taranto but called Tarentum in Roman times. This spider has an entirely undeserved reputation due to historical and cultural reasons, the development of a belief that the bite of this spider produces severe symptoms called tarantism.
